Like all boys growing up in Rome during the 1930s and 1940s, the author was expected to join the Balilla, Italy's fascist Youth Organization. With political divisions running deep in the families within his palazzo, he and his motley group of friends were recruited into the underground Resistance. Racing around Rome on bicycles, they smuggled messages and weapons for the partisans.
Later, the author fled to the Italian countryside and narrowly avoided German mop-up operations, despite being sold out by his most trusted of friends. But this is much more than a war story.

Having spent much time in Italy, it made things make sense. Thank you, Franco! I have spent a long while reading what it was to live in Europe during World War II. What was it one had to do to survive. What skills did it take that we no longer have today... He answered a lot of questions and painted a picture of survival... One of the jacket reviews calls this book "Felliniesque," and I couldn't agree more. The experience of reading this book is akin to watching one of the classic neorealist films of Fellini or Rosselini, in its magic and lightness and charm amid trying times. But one need not be a film buff to appreciate just how well written this story is. For anyone who cares about Italy, or even just good, heartfelt memoirs, this book is a wonderful choice. I can see book clubs getting into it, too.
This is the type of book that I wish I could share with many other people. A friend loaned it to me, knowing how much I love Italy, especially Rome. The story is a compelling one, told with just the right touch and tone. The loving and wry portraits of the Romagnoli family and their friends in pre-WWII Rome are a delight as told through the voice of a young Franco. Naturally the circumstances change as the war engulfs them. The story of the war years is recounted with enough detail to let you know the hardship and tragedy the Italians had to endure but it's not overdone. The degree to which friendships and loyalties were stressed by the tensions between the Fascists and the partisans was handled with great care and compassion. Overall, the tone of this book, the voice of the author, was captivating. It was a thoroughly enjoyable book. It should have a wider following. It's an enticing glimpse into the lives of this fascinating and creative family which I hope to learn more about by reading other books by the author and his family.
Personal and highly informative story of a youngster growing up in Fascist Italy during WWII and his work with the Resistance. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in Italian history.
I grew up watching the "Romagnoli's Table" with my parents on PBS out of Boston. I had no idea that his story reached back to Italy's fascism. This is an interesting an informative story of one boy's experience of Italy during World War II. I recommend it.
